Thanks for returning back to the hop today! We saw quite a few great projects yesterday! My favorite was Tammy’s “Aloha” Board Book on The Purple Muse blog. What was yours?
Well onto day 2 of the Hop so here is my second project! ~A Tiki Centerpiece~
Just a little background on me, I am a Stay At Home Mother & I have my own Custom Party Supply business from home. I do A LOT of Yo Gabba Gabba party decorations so my inner Party Planner had to show up to make something for this Birthday Blog Hop. What better idea than A Centerpiece. Every table at a party needs a great centerpiece, right? So here is mine!
Here is how I made it:
- The Tiki base, cylinder, & top was made from the 3D Pencil Box of the “School Days SVG Kit from SVG Cuts website. You can buy the set here. I just did not cut out the top part of the pencil & just used the bottom base for the top as well as the bottom. I then found a Tiki face clip art online that I converted from a JPeg file to a Cut file in Inkscape. I then sized it up in SCAL & cut it in a yellow, purple & tan colored cardstock (3 different sheets). After paper piecing the face together, I did cut the mouth section out from the cylinder (I used brown poster board) & using my ATG gun I glued a 4×4 square piece of clear acetate (I recycled old clear report covers I had from college that I knew I could use again someday). I inked up the edges of the face pieces before gluing them to the cylinder base to make it looked aged. I then also edged the brown tiki with a tan ink & brown ink to also give it a weathered look. I did forget to buy a LED Tealight but the light from it would shine thru the teeth of the Tiki to make it look like it’s angry! But that was the reason for me cutting a section from the base out, so that I can make it into a luminaria in case the Luau went into the night time.
- Now it would look cute alone or sitting on top of a cupcake stand, which I also made. I used green cardstock from The Paper Studio, base is textured cardstock & the top part is plain green cardstock. I used the base that I found on Aleisha Davis Designs blog as a free file. I didn’t care too much for the round top & I liked a more finished look with a square top. So I quickly created one in SCAL then I decided to add small palm trees to make it more into the Luau theme. I added a strip of yellow on the back side of the flaps to let the palm trees show up better.
- A centerpiece can’t be without flowers. So I wanted some Hibiscus flowers but didn’t think I have a SVG file for them. So I searched for just the right clip art & converted it into a cut file in Inkscape. I imported it into SCAL & made a shadow of it to make a base in Purple cardstock (from Stampin Up), I made another shadow but that was smaller than the purple base in flat yellow cardstock & inked it in red ink & then used textured cardstock from the Paper Studio in orange for the flower petals. I sprayed the petals with my Glitter Shimmer, also from Stampin Up (you can order from my rep if you don’t have one here). I used my golden glitter spray for the petals to give it that “bling”. I then cut the sides of the petals once I glued the pieces together & “cupped” the petals up & curled them back. So that way they can sit nicely under the stand & look realistic rather than a flat paper pieced flower.
